Hey guys,

This is addressed to everyone, but mrbishi in particular.

I've got an evo 1 engine, and I need to know how to do the following, if anyone has seen it done or even better, done it:
- use cordia gearbox with evo flywheel (7 bolt, not 6 like cordia)
- fabricate top engine mount (different to vr4)
- wire it in

If anyone can help me out, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Adrian

I didn't think there was any difference in the block? i know the later model EVO motors, things are on the other side, eg timing belt ect..

my cordia had an evo 1 motor in it before i got it....not now tho..:(
it didn't have a front engine mount he was mated up to a vr4 gear box with the transfer case removed( that bits not the hard part, fitting the box in is...).....i guess you could get a customised flywheel made ie welded up and re drilled...but he clutches are different too, think the cordia ones are smaller...so you might need a custom clutch too to match the input shaft and pressure plate etc....

that's about all i know about it ....

deans motor is the one out of japrcr's car (the guy never got it going)
dean took both of the flywheels down to the machinining place (i think they made the evo one the same as the cordia one)

we had to change the top engine mounts and anything that was attached to them, you will need to get them off a galant/sonata

at the moment it has my modified top engine mount in it

the gear box bolted up once the fly wheel was machined

the fire wall engine mount is a cordia one

used a cordia clutch

over all it was a bastard compared to doing an actuall vr4

so is that motor running now...i only saw it on the floor of the guys garage...after seeing what he masacred to get the vr4 box in, ie lower control arms taken to with a grinder etc i think going for a cordia box would be better......but you think a vr4 would do??..easier....can be spec'd up to evo more or less anyway yeah..??

its at the auto elec getting wired at the moment
the cordia g/box seems to be pretty strong(depending on driving style)
i think the difference in from the evo to the vr4 is only like 10-15kw so i dont think it is worth the extra trouble

Thanks for everyone's input.

I'm going to get some flywheel machining done, then use the cordia clutch and gearbox.
I think I've got the wiring under control now, and I'll deal with the top engine mount when the engine is in.

The evo engine is 180kW, so depending on which spec of the vr4 you get, it can be up to 30kW more, but we'll wait and see whether it's worth the extra hassle or not.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,
Adrian

not to burst your "evo engine has more power" bubble but the VR4 is a stronger engine = more powerful engine to begin with even if the factory power output is less afaik

Well, the engine is finally in, after a lot of hassles.
Had the flywheel holes plugged, redrilled with the new pattern, then the back machined so that it fitted over the new crank.
Two new engine mounts have been made (the radiator and timing cover ones).
Just thought I'd keep you all up to date, and thanks for everyone's help.
I'll keep you all posted, and get some pics of things up soon.

Cheers,
Adrian

Ok, a couple more small questions for you all.

First, how much clearance do other people have between the plenum and the firewall? Where the tps sits, I'd be lucky to have 15mm, so is this enough or is the extra torque gonna twist the motor more than that?

Second, for those wiring up the new alternator, are the two wires in the plug that i'm assuming goes to the regulator the same in the cordia and the evo/vr4? Can I just put the new plug on the old wires?

Thanks,
Adrian
