Just thought I would detail "how to" refurbish a shifter for our cars.

Step 1:

Remove from car, once this is done you will need to remove the "circlip" from the bottom of the chrome extension.

Believe me CRC is your friend........spray some in the extension and pry out the rubber grommet.

Remove the complete extension.

Image

Here comes the hard bit..........grab a small grinder or bit or file and try and remove the "crimped" area of the shifter bush.......take your time and it should look like this once removed.

Image

Image

Do not cut all the way through................This will allow you to weld the bush back on once finished.

Remove the 4 10mm bolts that hold the gear insulator.

Once the whole shifter is apart you may see a destroyed fulcrum bush:

Image

Image

This is what causes the whole shifter to move up and down, without the fulcrum bush the main pivot moves to the "guide pin" causing the insulator to finally break as the force is no longer contained.

Make sure you clean the whole pivot point, any left over plastic bush will cause binding.

Image

OK........here is the good bit..........don't pay big dollars for a plastic replacement only for it to break again.....

Image

After some research I found a suspension bush that will work perfectly and you won't need to use the locating pin!

Here is the bush, perfect fit :)

Image

Cut the bush in half and remove some rubber from the internal diameter to fit the shifter.

Here it is sitting in the insulator:

Image

If you have a new gear insulator use it...........if not and yours is repairable......I suggest using rapid-fix for all the cracked areas of the insulator.

Ok.........once the bush is trimmed, fit the selector:

Grease and insert the selector into the insulator:

Here is how the bush looks from underneath:

Next, add the selector rubbers, retaining washers and circlip..........application of the circlip will take some effort.......be careful.

But once this is done, no more up/down movement of the shifter!!!!!

Image

Weld the extension insulator back on and re-instate the chrome extension including the floor extension:

Install back in vehicle.............done

If you have any question feel free to ask me. :)

I have a few to fix!

Nice writeup. From what vehicle is the bush you used from? And what part of the suspension? Also do you think this rapid-fix you suggested would hold together a rubber strut top for a while, and maybe prevent any cracks from opening up....lol. Where's a set of car keys when you need em. Good ol' Tony Grieg. Man i'm loving this summer of cricket.

The bush is from a Holden Commodore VN -VP and is the rear shocker bushing........Nolathane part number is 43002.......I just bought the rubber ones, at $2 who could argue!!

Rapid fix is great glue for rubber, better than super glue...........would be best for you to add the glue then jack the car up to allow the rubber bushing to subside.

Yes..........put down some glue first then add the power, add more glue on top but make sure no white spots are visible (powder too heavy)........works great on rubber, have even fixed badly destroyed engine mounts with this stuff!!

What is the part number for the bushing? I called about this part number (MD701605) and the local dealer said they have 88 in stock in Atlanta. This should be the same part as the Cordia since it uses the same shifter style (it is from a Chariot, uses the same transmission as the Cordia/Tredia). I will be ordering two this week.
