i received this email the other day and thought why not.

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN AUSTRALIA
> DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF PETROL FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT
> THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR
> STOCKPILES.
>
> AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET
> LOSS OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE
> OIL COMPANIES.
>
> THEREFORE THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK
> IT UP THEIR BEHIND" DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT
> BUY A SINGLE DROP OF PETROL THAT DAY.
>
> THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL
> TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD
> OUT.
>
> WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES
> IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL
> IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?
>
> REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF PETROL GOING
> UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES,
> TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS
> PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING,
> BUILDING SUPPLIES MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE
> DO!
>
> WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE
> AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
>
> SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO
> EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE SEPTEMBER 22nd A DAY
> THAT THE CITIZENS OF AUSTRALIA "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

The problem is a simple one of supply and demand - people don't want to give up driving, so they'll keep buying petrol. It's that simple. Not buying fuel for one day means you'll buy more on a different day, and there is no effective change in sales for the oil companies. As for choking on their supplies if we don't buy for one day, that's just not realistic at all - the Australian consumer market makes up for the tiniest percentage of worldwide oil consumption (freight, public transport and the military use a lot of fuel).

Not trying to be too negative here, just realistic. If you want to make an impact, find an alternative form of transport for a week or so.

This plan is ghey, I've recieved soooooo many emails about this crap, Im gonna block the next person who sends it to me.
As Age already said, people need petrol, you wont get 100% of the population to not buy petrol which is besides the point anyway as you will get everyone filling up on the day before or the day after hence buying the same amount of petrol anyway. Petrol is expensive for a reason, and its not because of its popularity. Its because its running out (see thread in general), its because of Katrina, Iraq, Saudi under pressure from Iraq/Iran/Taliban etc to not do the US any favours, the tax on a tax here in Aus along with us under contract to buy from overseas even though we are extracting our own.

On another note: Just something I thought of, why is it that motor oil stays the smae price, HPR30 has been floating around $35/5L for years, it never moves unless its on sale or something. :?
Also, ever notice how as soon as there is a price rise of oil (eg Katrina) within 2 days the fuel price goes up yet when the price goes down it can take up to 2 weeks for the cheap stuff to hit petrol stations...

Nash, I think the engine oil might have a much much greater profit margin on it then petrol does. $35 for 5 litres is $7 a litre. It probably costs them under 50 cents per litre in resources. On top of that it isn't taxed like petrol is.

Also the newer oils are synthetic so the price of crude oil dosen't affect them.

Oh yeah also about the original topic, boycotting petrol stations on a particular day is a silly idea if you still use the same amount of petrol anyway. You actually have to use less petrol if you want there to be an effect, and even then the price isn't going to go down, you'll just spend less.
