Hi,
My wife and I will be in Melbourne on the 6th to 8th of January staying at the Pensione Hotel in Spencer Street.

We have never been to Melbourne before.

Is anybody willing to show us around for a day?

I will pay for petrol and food.

enjoy your time in Melbourne, the visitors center is at fed square and they can give you some ideas of what to do.

Some suggestions...
- walk around, explore the laneways etc.
- have lunch at degraves st (mostly cafes), dinner in hardware lane (restaurants)
- ride the city circle tram
- drinks at rooftop bar Level 7, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne (Cookie is downstairs, very nice restaurant/bar)
- walk along southbank
- on the south side of the river on swanston st/stkilda road you have: national gallery of victoria, the arts centre, melbourne theatre company, botanical gardens, war memorial,
- the museum, IMAX cinema and Melbourne university are up the north end of town
- Lygon street for italian food (top end of town)
- Go to chapel street south yarra for shopping & nightlife, moonlight cinema (outdoor cinema)
- Go to acland street st kilda for cafes/restaurants, ice cream, beach, luna park, stkilda pier
- Go to china town (east end of little bourke st) for asian cuisine
- Visit wineries in the yarra valley
- Go to Mountain Goat Brewery in Richmond
- ACMI (australian centre of the moving image) is at Fed Square, they often screen short / arthouse / independent films which are interesting.
- Melbourne Aquarium (I've never been, it's more or less across the road from your hotel)

You can get almost anywhere by train or tram, you won't have experienced melbourne unless you've been on a tram... The public transport is easy, you just buy a daily zone 1 ticket and you can ride on trams, trains and buses with the same ticket.

I work full time in the city but I'm not opposed to a drink after work so PM me if you want to meet up.

oh, plenty of night life in the city. Flinders Lane is good. If you want my pick for a bar http://www.spicemarket.net.au/ but they have a strict dress code and get there early if it's friday night as there will be a queue. Just make sure you dress respectably though or you won't get in.

I forgot to mention the casino, if you're in to that sort of thing, it's not all gambling there is lots of shopping and restaurants around there.
