hey all, decided to get my bike license since I can park for free in the city and will save heaps on petrol.

Since I'll be on L's initially, what's a good 250cc bike to get? Probably only got $1-2k to spend any suggestions on what model/year I should get (or what condition I should expect for my $$$)?

You may be able to find a kawasaki ZZR250 for 2k. They're a parallel twin four stroke and fairly reliable. also their brother bike is the GPX250 with basically the same engine and few kilos lighter but i think they're a bit uglier. If you don't care about looks or power you could go a Honda CT110 postie bike. they're so reliable, cheap and uses barely any fuel. Then you got the older more rarer bikes from the 70's and 80's like the Honda CD250, Yamaha RD250 and many more.

Another option would be to get something like the Honda CBR250RR or NSR150 2stroke, they're more than what you're looking to spend but you can always get one with some fairing damage and either repair it or just take the plastics off.

Hehe...I went through 'the bike syndrome' back in 1996...only due to the fact I could ride a bike (on my 'L's') when I was 16 without guidance - it would give me a six month buffer on a new lease of life (freedom!!!). My parents wouldn't allow me to (thank god)...chances are, I would not still be here today! A comprise was made and it had to be Turbocharged...enter Cordia Turbo! Blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda!!! Having said that, the bikes that I were looking at around that period, in 250cc guise, are going for around that budget. I would try to pick up a nice Kawasaki ZZR250 or a GPX250. Better still, if you can find a Suzuki Across, go for it...they were slightly quicker for a fourstroke. If you can stretch your budget a bit, go for the CBR250 or the two-stroke Suzuki RGV's...nonetheless, they are all competent in their own right! :P

do you have the 250cc rule over there or our power to weight one which allows up to a 660?

hmmm, yeah vic has 250cc max. I'm wondering if i should get a postie bike for the time being and then get something decent once i'm off the restriction.

The cool thing is that because i'm on a full car license, once i'm done with 6 months on L's I go on P's but don't have to display p-plates while i'm on probation.

Postie bikes if you don't ever need to use the highway or get places quick! Haha! They are good for their intended purposes but I'd recommend getting a 250cc as you can at least do highway stuff on it!

One that hasn't been mentioned is the Honda VTR250 and earlier VT250 naked bikes.

Or look for a 250cc road trail bike for something more fun?
