Hey guys, the my new i pod/ i-tunes wont work on this old crap computer with xp sp1

I have decided to go along the path of a laptop because I don't really play game's etc.

i want one which will be good with multi-tasking, eg running winamp, itunes, firefox, msn, nero at the same time etc.

Where is a good place to buy laptops from? would anyone reccomend more expensive stores like harvy norman, or cheaper looking deals like ebay??

also What processors/grap cards are the go these days?

My budget is about $1600-$1700

cheers :egeek:

i got mine from dell about 3-4 years ago, still going strong, i ticked all the options boxes when i got it so its reativley in date. took a few weeks to arrive but it been a good toy

my reccomendation is you want the one with the best battery life n a big hard drive. some of the crappy ones batterys have very short life, when mine was new i could get nearly 4 hours out of it which is great os you buy a laptop to just move around and not worry about it going flat every hour.

harvey normans and the big chan sores can knock quite a bit off if u squeze their arm, or just ask them what they can throw in with it and or make up some bogus offer from another store.

Battery life really depends on what you do with it. I bought a laptop that gets shit battery life... just over an hour... but I NEVER use it far enough away from a powerpoint for it to bother me. If you're THAT worried about it, buy a second battery.

It doesn't really matter what processor you get, just be sure to it's a Core2 Duo. Other than that even the base models are quick enough these days to do the regular plodding (music, video, + general internet trolling). That being said I'd look for something with at least 2gb RAM as it'll let you do more things at once without noticing the slugs and it also helps when you're watching movies.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501, it's one of the basic models. It kicks ass. Unfortunately though I got the AMD so it's a bit sluggish, but other than that I've never had a problem and TBH I don't run it hard enough to notice the slugs too often anyways.

These Dells would be good to look at. They're basic and pretty cheap... the $999 one looks really good, and it comes with 2gb RAM and a 160gB HDD... I would take the upgrade to the Core2Duo and the TrueLife screen.

The other thing I'd suggest is to either get it with XP SP2 on it or buy it as-is and when it arrives, format and install XP SP2. Vista is still a bit shaky... I'm a bit biased though, I REALLY don't like Vista :P

Yeah for the basics that should cover you.

See what you can get at HN etc but TBH I would seriously consider ordering a Dell online. Cheap as chips and their tech support is generally not bad... I had a power cable die on me and called to report it at 4pm, they had a replacement on my doorstep from Sydney at 9am the next day :O
