Are you vacuum lines connected correctly, or even at all?

Yep , it's a very common problem.

1st
Check your vacume hoses if they are all in right position, if you don't know i am sure we can come up with something

2nd
Check the 5th gear selenoid , it's under your airbox underneath the airbox holder. There is a plug that goes from the selenoid to the rest of the loom, check if it is plugged in!Once it's connected you should hear a click sound, that means it's engaged.

If still nothing works than change your selenoid and the vacume thingy attached to the side of your gearbox.vacume hoses from the selenoid go to it.

I had this problem for ages and in my case the vacume thingy was the problem.

You have two small plugs there which are actually for reverse lights, next to them is a selenoid one it's much bigger in size.

There is a fuse you can also check regarding 5th gear selenoid, pop your bonnet take your fuse box cover off and take a look, can't remember which one of top of my head

I was thinking of a relay not a fuse.To be honest i can't remember which fuse in a car would have anything to do with it.

EVLGSR Here are some pics

5th gear selenoid

vacume thingy/attached to gearbox

Reverse lights

As for correct way to set up vacume lines here you go.

There are three plastic pipes coming out of your selenoid, if you stand above you can see that all three are in orde, one after another.

The first vacume hose that comes out of the first pipe goes to your vacume canister (black thing attached to your gearbox)

http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image ... ume1ew.jpg

From the canister it goes to the opening on your inlet manifold.

Some poeple including me removed the canister and just have one hose from the pipe to the manifold.

2nd vacume hose from second pipe from your selenoid goes to the vacume thing thats attached to your gerabox. There are two pipes , you connect it to the one on the right (see the pic) it's further away.

http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vacume1pp.jpg

3rd vacume hose from the third pipe from your selenoid goes to the one one the left side (see the pic above)

Also when removing your vacume "thingy" ( two 14 mm bolts) make sure you don't loose the pin that connect the input shaft that goes into your gerabox.

AB it's good enough for FAQ.
