Is it possible that I have left something unplugged ? Blown fuse ?

I haven't had any 5th gear problems before, so I'm assuming I've missed something along the way after swapping dashboards ?

Any help appreciated !

Cheers.

Sounds like the reed switch is buggered in behind to speedo......can you replace it with the original?

Hey Andrew, still using the original cluster, is it possible it could be something else ? Unless out of my luck the original has just crapped itself..

Did you plug everything back in?

Does the speedo work?

Everything is plugged in, drove to work this morning, changed into 5th and it was no different to 4th gear.

The speedo and all other gauges are working properly. I've got the cluster out again just having a look around.

Stumped.

Day off today, so I'm hoping I can get it going.

I'm in the process of removing the old wiring loom from the original dash. Is it worth my time swapping looms over at all ? Or should I be looking elsewhere ?

Changing 5th gear relay/solenoid ? Try another cluster ?

Cheers

After taking the car for another drive, the speedo needle doesn't move smoothly when building up speed, it shakes as it moves.

Local wrecker has a GSL with a cluster intact, may be worth a shot.

Do you still have reverse lights Mike?

Still have reverse lights Andrew, I checked them yesterday after reading an older thread that you mentioned that in.

On the way home now with this other cluster to test out.

I'm hoping it's the reed switch. What could be some other possible causes ?

The main control relay......it can be found on the drivers side above the footwell (Black box)........you might have pulled it or something when removing the dash?

Solved ! After removing the original wiring from the old dashboard, I managed to connect the cluster up & the other 3 main large connectors that connect up under next to the fuse board. Went for a drive, & 5th is back in action.

Comparing connector pins from the original loom & to the one that is currently in the car now, there were some minor differences, with 1 or 2 pins less on some.

I had a feeling I should of switched looms when I was swapping out dashboards.. but you live & learn !

Thanks for the help also Andrew, I'll know what to look for now if I encounter any other 5th gear problems.

Nice to hear you fixed it Mike......I was just about to ask you about the wiring looms. (Sounds like you had a GSR one, little different from GSL) :)
