Bitza as the oil catch can is empty is it worth switching the pipes over on the can? Just in case they are not right?

I saw this on the internet, is this what mine should look like? Cos its done differently, obviously mine doesn't have the filter?

Your PCV valve is still connected to the inlet manifold........the other line that comes out of the rear of the rocker cover has the "catch can" attached.......the line left over goes back into the rubber inlet plumbing......no problem with that.

If the catch can is empty this is good..........it shows the engine is not breathing therefore the bottom end is in good condition.

But, the way it's set up excess crankcase pressure returns to the inlet manifold.....and so does the oil as the rear point supplies the cover with fresh air. I would remove the PCV just to make sure its working.

Number 2............it has a ball and seat contained inside it........so basically if boost were applied to it this would cause it to close......and vacc would open it.

Take it out and see if you can blow or suck through it.......if you can't replace it. :)

When i bought my VR4 it had an oil filter relocation kit in the same place you have yours. My advice is to get rid of it.

Check underneath your throttlebody to see if the PCV (or whatever its called on vr4's - FLAV or something) is hooked up. Meek sell FLAV block off plates for $8 i think, but you can pick them up at other places...or make one yourself. Number 2 on your picture i use for the cordia gearbox vacuum and BOV. Number 1 goes to catch can.

Looking closer at that photo the blue hose connected to number 2 should really be connected to the turbo inlet pipe. Scrub that it's an atmospheric catch can...which is illegal anyways, so not sure about that photo.

As for oil catch cans, I bought an oil catch can from here,

http://www.saikoumichi.com/

Some good info there and the guy that makes them is a legend. Really helpful.

So what is your catch can connected to? any photos? Did you see my engine? This first pic? Is that right? Ill have a look tomorrow and see if the PCV is hooked up and working. Where should that lead to anyway? Im such an amateur with this haha

From your photo it looks like it's hooked up ok. I noticed with mine that i still had the dipstick pop up a little bit after i installed it. I changed it's location so the hoses were a shorter length and it fixed the problem. Nice use of garden hose by the previous owner.

Picture 2 shows the "open" catch can........this is a better setup for high powered VR4 engines so oil doesn't contaminate the air/fuel mixture at high revs high boost......yes it illegal but this is how mine is set up also, as the engine will not re-burn the crankcase pressure as it's not connected back to the inlet manifold.

Alot of drag racers actually use scavenger pumps to remove crankcase pressure....this also is vented to atmosphere....but gives them more power due top less drag on engine components.

So they should be hooked up for the breather valve not the pcv? And then to the air filter? Yeah no open one for me, trying to make it as legal as possible

Out of curiosity Andrew...do you use a catch can?

Alot of time and spanner throwing went into this!...:)

Post subject:  Re: Dreaded Smoke

Biggest problem with aftermarket oil catch cans is that sometimes the fittings or hoses are too small or restrictive. The hole size of the fittings should be at least as large as the factory ones or even larger for higher boosted engines. If the catch can, fittings or hoses are restrictive, this will cause crankcase pressure to rise and oil will leak past the turbo piston rings causing the engine to smoke.

The air filter cover looks awesome! Custom?

Post subject:  Re: Dreaded Smoke

Yes.........it's a 104mm hump joint with 100mm 45 degree stormwater pipe to a 100mm air cleaner. :)

I want one, makes mine look so old haha

So one more quick question, i want to change my oil catch can to match yours bitza, so one from the PCV and one from the Breather. But when i change it, any ideas where the pipe from my air filter is supposed to go? Should I just leave it open or block it somehow?

Post subject:  Re: Dreaded Smoke

Alot of aftermarket catch cans only have 2 fittings........I actually tapped another fitting in the top so I could run a small filter (and let it breathe).......I could have easily routed that back to the air cleaner or the throttle body.

Found this link on another forum that explains everything about the catch cans and how to plug them in, interesting read.

WooHoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took my car the the garage today to find out what the smoke was and how much it was going too cost...

The engine is solid, the turbo is clean and its just running a little rich.

Total cost including the check up = $0

Now time to treat my car :)
