Where can I find the idle adjustment screw on the 4G37 ? I see 2 adjustable White heads below the air cleaner, but no idea which is which, whether idle speed or mixture ? If they are it at all.

Or better yet does anyone have a diagram/break down of the 37 to save me flooding the Tech section

Very very true.

Okay here is the pic, the first is spring loaded behind that bracket in the way.

Cheers Andrew ! I'm learning as I go here, I'll get there soon enough with carbys

Is there much of a procedure ? Aside from letting the car warm up is there anything else that needs to be done before adjusting to the correct idle speed ?

As you stated........let the car warm up..........adjust the idle speed........your carby also has dashpot control to allow the throttle to basically "pause" before returning to base..........this will also require adjustment.

You should be able to lift the control spring until the engine revs between 1100 - 1200 rpm then returns to 850 - 900 rpm.

I can't quite tell from the photo but I believe it's the one with the white knob.

I could be wrong because its been years since I looked at a GSL, but I think the large white knob is the idle speed adjustment and the other screw pointed at by bitza is the dashpot adjustment? The other white one is the mixture screw.

Made some slight adjustmemts yesterday, got the idle sitting good between 850-900 rpm, warmed it up this morning drove 20 minutes got to a set of lights only for it be idling around 1200-1300 rpm & stalls on me, so I've stuffed up somewhere.

Is it worth using a vacuum gauge, or re-adjust with some trial and error ?

What screw did you adjust? What do you want to put a vacuum gauge on it for, if you are just adjusting the idle?

I've adjusted the idle speed (large white one), but unsure with this dashpot control adjustment.

What speed did you set the idle to? My info says 750rpm for a manual or 800rpm for an auto. Does the mixture screw turn or is that just a tamper proof plug on the back of it? Adjust the mixture screw for best idle at the speed you have set it to.

Adjust the dashpot by lifting the rod under the dashpot diaphragm all the way until it is blocked, the speed should be approximately 1900rpm for a manual or 1500 for an auto. When you release the rod, it should take about 6 seconds or so before the engine returns to idle speed.

These adjustments should be done with the engine hot and no electrical loads on the engine.

At the moment it's sitting on 800rpm, the mixture screw does turn which I've adjusted but may need to be slightly adjusted again as the idle does sound it could/should be smoother than it is.

Regarding the dashpot when you say lifting the rod, is that done by the screw adjustment ?

You lift the rod manually until it stops and adjust the screw to get the speed.

Normally the dashpot scew goes through that threaded hole on the small bracket and hits up against the lever connected to the dashpot rod. Yours is a bit of a different setup to what I have seen before. Unless the dashpot screw is just missing.

Hmm, unless it is. I can't say I've bothered looking in this area before, nor could I imagine my grandfather (previous owner) ever needing to make adjustment.

I'll replace it & continue from there then.

Appreciate the help !

Another problem, most probably caused by myself

2200 rpm & below it stutters at WOT, is this incorrect mixture adjustment ?

It's important for the idle mixture to be set right otherwise you can get some driveability problems but I wouldn't have expected them to occur at WOT.

Did you mess around with any of the other setttings of the carby? Is the choke coming all the way off with the engine hot? Is the vacuum secondary diaphragm in good condition? When was the last time you replaced your fuel filter? Does your carby have a float level sight glass and if so what is the fuel level?

You could also try giving the carby a bit of a clean with carby cleaner or maybe even rev up the engine and as you release the throttle, cover the top of the carby with your hand to induce a very strong vacuum to try and clear any blockage.
