Hi guys,

I bought a 85 ab gsr and have noticed that it blows a bit of blue smoke at idle but is very faint.
Apon further inspection I found an oil build up inside the air filter box.
Also car has a funny idle between 1000rpm and 700rpm as it'll idle up and down to these points.
so I'm thinking the rings may need to be done? Also found a build up of old oil in the turbo compressor housing.

As far as mods go, the car and motor are completely stock.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Give the engine a compression check, usually light smoke at idle is valve stem seals as the engine is under no load.

The oil you have found in the front of the turbo will be from small amounts from the breather..........the "funny" idle may be from "pitting" in the exhaust valves causing cylinder pressure to exit........I have the same problem with the AC. :)

Yeah ok sounds good, also found oil at the tip of the exhaust system.
As it looks to have been there for some time, dunno if that helps.
Thanks dude.

Oh while I think of of it, I can smell burnt oil when sitting stationary for as little as 5 seconds or more.

Had the same problem with the AC...........very oily even at the exhaust tip......when I pulled the head down I found the valve stem seals where cracked and not "hugging" the valve..........also check the turbo for thrust movement (in and out) as this will also cause smoking at idle........but this will take some time and it turns from a light smoke into a gradual plume as the turbine stops spinning and doesn't allow oil back to the sump. :)

If you rev the engine does the smoke disappear?

Usually if the turbo is stuffed you can rev it cleanly........but after a while the smoke is blinding.

See my thought was the idle issue is from oil being burnt in the top of the cylinder from it either coming in from the air filter box or possibly from the for turbo oil seal.

The turbo shaft has no movement up and down or in and out

Either way your plugs will be black and showing signs of oil usage............the oil will only go into the airbox as the crankcase is closed on boost to stop positive charge pushing oil out of the engine..........a small amount of oil in the airbox is normal.

Pull the head off............valve stem seals new replacing. :)

Yeah there was a fair bit of oil in the airbox. The bottom ends bearings need to be replaced so by the sounds of it if the heads gotta come off I'd be better off rebuilding the whole thing then.

Yep.........sounds good.........have done the same with the AC's 62.

Does the engine make a "clunking/grinding" noise when revved?

or is it a metallic knock when revved quickly?

Yeah it knocks after 3000rpm, plus the timing belt is really noisy. But I've got a spare motor sitting in the shed so ill rebuild that. Any idea of what a rebuild will cost for these 4G62 motors as I've never played around with these motors?

I'm currently in the process of rebuild.........the head needs welding along with rebuilding.........the timing belts (including the offside belt) will be replaced to ensure reliability. :)
