Post subject:  Changing the gear shift insulator

Hey guys,

Just a quick question can you change the gear shift insulator from the inside, or does it have to be under. Tryed stripping the centre console and took off the two screws but cannot manage to take off that metal plate. Anyone changed the insulator before? What needs to be done?

You need to move the bolts from underneath..........prick of a job.

Once you get the linkage out you'll have more trouble........you will need to remove the circlip from the base of the shifter........then remove the "pressed" in rubber section.........real pain........after removal you can then replace the insulator.

Guessing your gearstick fell through the floor?
Yeah prick of a job and in my case middle exhaust needed to be removed first.

Especially if you have the exhaust heat shield in place. Makes getting the 2 nuts on passenger side very hard to get a spanner on from underneath. I drove around for years with only 2 nuts holding the whole thing in place....until i found a bloke who gives me free use of his hoist.

12mm bolts x4 under it, can be a pain to get out if your car is low or you have a massive zorst in the way.
I think the ones that hold it to the gearbox are 14mm.

if you just have the rubber thing you will need some internal cir clip pliers to remove the gear stick so you can separate it and get it out of the mounting plate.

removing the gear stick through the floor is pretty straight forward, getting it into the new spider is the annoying bit
