Post subject:  5th gear solenoid and switch voltage

Just spent 2 hours searching and i can't find anything definative...plus someone deleted the 5th gear wiring diagram from photobucket...so hoping someone can help me here.

Previous owner disconnected 5th gear. I've been trying to wire it all back up but still i have no 5th gear. I've replaced the solenoid and diaphragm with known working ones. Put in a switch which i know works. Fuse is fine. Hoses have no splits in them. So i tested the connections going to the switch and solenoid.

My question is should the switch be receiving 5V or 12V? And same goes for solenoid. Because i currently have 12V going to the switch and 5V going to the solenoid. I'm pretty sure this is wrong.

Could i have stuffed the relay or the switch itself by driving the car with the wiring connected wrongly?

I checked the 5th gear relay behind the drivers kick panel. The relay has 7 connection points but the plug only has 6 wires going into it. Does anyone know if this could be what the problem is?

Anyone...

The whole circuit runs on 12 volt.........here is the diagram:

Thanks for that Bitza.

Judging from that diagram, if the reverse light switch is not wired-in the whole system won't work.

I'm hopeless with car electrics. Is the fuse box the diagram shows the one in the cabin? The "back" fuse?

That's right, the fuse for the overdrive is the "back" one as this is where power is sourced from.............there is also a reed switch (speed sensor) behind the speedo so overdrive is only engaged when the car is moving.

you should just be able to send 12v to the solenoid to activate it, this should only need 2 wires into the existing plug. that will give you a manual "over drive" switch so you have high and low in all 4 gears.

I just switched the vac hoses on the solenoid around which allows me 4 high gears. Seems i'm missing the main power wire for the whole thing to work. Whoever wired in the ecu, looks like they used the power wire for something else. In high gear 4th is effectively 5th which is all i wanted. Didn't want to be doing 3800rpm cruising along the highway. When i have more time i'll look to rewire 5th gear properly but i'm not all that unhappy having only 4 gears.
