I don't disagree..........but for standard or slightly boosted SOHC or DOHC turbo engines this would be a shoe in............not to mention it's a direct 5 speed, not the 4 speed with the electronic overdrive which can easily eliminate fault finding...........not to mention loosing overdrive in the 164 if the speed sensor or the speedo cable breaks.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for upgrading the transmission. I'm just asking the question whether a km206 is actually stronger? And if a stronger box like a f5m33 or maybe f5m31(km210) can be made to fit, then use it.

i have already got the km206, purely because we thought it would bolt straight in. i don't disagree that a f5m33 would better.. but i'll see how the km206 holds up....

by the way cc lancer cables fit.

I've already tried to fit the KM210..............it's a NO GO.........the driveshaft configuration is wrong..........the FM33 is the better option.

well i've found a good cc gsr box for $800, which would need the transfer drive shaft removed and the viscous welded.. It would be perfect!

but would it still fit with the chassis cut??? i would have to take some measurement..

I don't think i can afford to buy it right now, see how i go after the engineering..

Yes gsr lancer box will fit with the cuts you have made.

I fitted vr4 box into my cordia, by making pretty much the same cut as you have done. I have power steering so had to grind some stuff off the gearbox to clear that but otherwise no other issues.

I thought this may be the case with a VR4/ CC GSR box..
I have powersteering as well, how much is needed to be ground out of the gearbox for it to fit and what did you grind off. How much clearance have you got now?

Had to grind off some of the fins at the back of the gearbox and a couple of other bits not a lot though. Didnt have heaps of clearance but enough.

Guy who bought my engine is a rally racer and uses a standard vr4 box. He couldnt sing enough praise about the strength of the VR4 box, has never had a problem or had to rebuild it despite it being absolutely thrashed at high speeds continuously while racing. Just thought I'd share for anyone thinking about doing this conversion and getting the best bang for their $$.

A TM Magna box will fit because it is the same type as a Cordia box (KM164), just different ratios and the shifter arrangement is cable. A TN/TP uses the KM210.

According to the transmission workshop manual, a CC Lancer GSR 4g93t uses a W5M33 which is the 4wd version of a f5m33. So it shares the same basic drivetrain as a vr4.

So what Mitsubishi models run a F5M33 gearbox?

Just off the top of my head - some fwd V6, fwd Eclipse turbo etc. Some gearboxes use larger diameter driveshafts too.
