Hey,
Just wondering what is directly behind the top of the timing cover besides the cam gear? Because from that area i can hear a horrible rattly/grindy noise that does not sound good!!!!!!!! My missus heard it from 2 streets away!!
Also ona side note my car won't idle and is throwing an AFM code. Great

Timing belt could make a scraping noise, especially if it’s old and has strands scraping away the covers.

As for the rattling, idler and tensioner bearings, alternator, air con comp or ps pump maybe??

I would remove and inspect the parts listed above, it could save your engine. If you don’t feel these could be the problem Andrew may help pin point the problem.

It takes 2 seconds to remove the top cover, run it with it off and confirm the noise is within the covers. I've had a dizzy bearing fail once and it made 'horrible noises'

take your cam cover off and check the belt is still tight.

Last time my car made a noise like that it was cause the belt tensioner had broken and was letting the belt slacken and the belt was hitting between the cam gears onto the cam cover. (4g63 dohc vr4) I was very lucky that day drove about 150km like that. The motor sounded like some 70's diesel tractor until 2000 rpm then it just went away until it went back under 2000rpm

Who cares if the 62 belt snaps, it's non-interferance, so the worst that will happen is you will need a tow. Only takes about 45 mins to do one of those timing belts.

its a bit of a inconvenience, 2 hours for a tow then most likely wont be able to fix it/get part till the next day its a hassle if u can live with that then great if not then do change it every 10 years lol

but a loud rattle doubt its the belt but worth a check!

If it's the belt rubbing on the cover or a belt slipping on a siezed pulley then it will make a noise.

not yet. Pulling her apart on boxing day. But driving to work this morning at 110 down the new northern expressway my passenger side driveshaft came out of the gearbox!!! It just wouldnt go anywhere. I thought with the conventional diff, if 1 wheel unloaded it would transfer power to the other wheel? So i pulled over and pushed the cv joint back into the box and drove to work fine. What the hell? What could cause this?????

Possibly one or a combination of these reasons:
1) faulty or missing snap ring on end of shaft
2) wasn't installed properly to begin with
3) fitment of a Magna steering knuckle which sits out further, means driveshaft is too short?

I'll go with number one.........sounds like the snap ring on the end of the shaft is missing or damaged, allowing the CV to move out of the spider gears..........there is no other physical reason why it popped out as the shaft is contained between the hub and gearbox.

Just checked some dimensions.............wheel track magna 1510mm, cordia 1410mm...........that's 100mm difference or 50mm per wheel or 25mm for the inner CV's............that basically means the back of the cordia CV's are on the edge of the inner snap ring.

Seems funny though........when I installed both my CV's I had no need to readjust the boots........HUMM.

No............James was looking for positive camber as the conversion left the wheels horizontal.

Just measured up my car.............the wheel track came in at 1435mm.......minus the wheel spacers makes it 1410mm.......the correct track, therefore the Magna conversion actually doesn't widen track at all.
