td05-20G would be a total waste of time on a mild SOHC. i don't see how you would gain anything over a 16g. your not flowing any more air, and if the hot side is the same, then your not reducing exhaust back pressure so your not gonna get more power there.
efficiency wise, the 20g is probably far too big so i don't see you making any gains there either.

cooler wise. biggest isn't always best, but dont be scared of a big cooler. i had a hybrid 300x600x76?, with 3 inch cold side piping a big highflow tc06, and probably had less lag than most of you on this forum (bar the td05 guys :P)

if your not going nuts, keeping stock ecu then i would be doing:
exhaust
cooler
td05-14b or 16g.
14psi ish
maybe a cam regrind.
that will be plenty for a mild setup. after that, your starting to look at big bucks to go further!

Ive had all the turbos on 4G61t 4G62t 4G63t's, SOHC's and DOHC's
the TC05 quick to spool up but old style turbo
the TC06 laggy as its old technolgy heaps of topend
the 14B was great for 1.8 sohc, but lacking topend
the 16G would be a better option for the 1.8 sohc
the big 16G and 20G are almost the same but the 20G make more power at the topend

if the 20G is still in the same 16G front housing it will spool like a 16G, if you can get a TD06 cover thats when it will be abit big for the SOHC

cheap ebay turbos are cheap for a reason... chances are it would fail and take your engine with it, not worth the risk imho

Sorry Jamie,
But if the "cheap" turbo is properly balanced it will work well, some off the guys that run VL's use the same turbo I have...........to date no problems even with 30 psi boost.

Did you get yours balanced after buying to make sure Andrew? Or do you just have to trust them?

I inspected my turbo when I received it (pulled it apart)........it was a JDM unit from America and had all the signs of balancing, right down to etches in the compressor wheel, paint and alignment marks with some small grinding of the exhaust wheel.

So far it hasn't failed.

Just check out the last few seconds of the vid:

Jamie,
It wasn't purchased off of Ebay...........but from JDM direct.........it's basically a Garrett with a holset rear housing (0.89 rather than 0.86)...........the chinese ones were half the price again!

I see...........yeah, but even if you bought the "cheap" one you can still replace the cartridge for a reasonable price......it's the housings that cost the most.

This guy is said to be quite a reputable seller, good price as well.

Plus no boost controller is required as the actuator diaphragm is preset is 17~18 psi.

Or, if you don't want to run such boost, i guess you could ask for one of these instead.
