well, that's my guess anyway,

i have a friend who pays more for his insurance because he lost his license for speeding for 6 months.

that could explain the reason u are getting high prices for other insurance company quotes. That doesn't explain why an intercooler made them refuse you insurance.

Perhaps call them up again, speak to a different person. You'll be suprised how different call-centre people can tell you different things sometimes. Don't know how far that'll get u coz they probably just punch everything into a computer.

Don't know how it'll get you legally, but when i got my cordia, when they asked if it had any non-standard modifications, i said "not that i know of". It actually has a bigger exhaust and alloys, but i didn't bother telling them about it. It it's only 3rd party and you're in an accident, the insurance company will rarely want to look at your car, and you'll probably have the chance to take out the mods. perhaps ring back RACV and say "oh yeah, that intercooler, didn't end up buying it"

just to let you know

i just called RACV and told them i was thinking about getting an intercooler installed

she said something like non-standard intercoolers are not acceptable under any RACV policy.

that's a bugger

If you dont tell them about modifications made to the car then if you do have an accident they can actually turn around and say 'sorry we wont cover you as you didnt notify us of the modifications made to your car, these modifications increase the chance of you having an accident which means we would have had to have changed the policy'

If they say this to you then you have no legs to stand on in court if you try to get them to cover you as it states it in the fine print that if you dont inform them they will not cover you in the event of an accident

Always tell them what you have done to your car it is safer that way

true,

there is a small amount of plausable denial that would be accepted, since you cant be expected to know every mod that's been done to it by the past owner. You assume the car is stock if you are told so by the seller of the car.

Ohhh thats a bugger alright... f#@k them hardcore. I was planning on getting a cooler soon as i can affoard it... looks like i betta look for new insurance first tho.

As for plausable deniablilty, it could work for a lot of things... but i dont think a cooler is one of em unless its a real stealthy top mount... coolers (especially on cords) tend to cry out with a loud voice "Im a beast! ". Stupid insurance companys... there needs to be one that likes beasts...
