Post subject:  Clutch replacement costs?

Hi all,

Just bought another Cordia with a Vr4 in it.
It needs a new clutch as can't get any gears.
Anyone have any idea of costs and recommendations of a workshop in northern suburbs. (Smithfield plains)

Cheers Michael

No gears?

Are you sure it's the clutch?

Could be as simple as the overdrive input shaft was left in "neutral"..........can you start it in gear without it lunging forward?

Hi

Will check that tomorrow. Had the Raa to check and get a tow home and the guy said clutch plate. But who knows lol.
You can go through the gears ok with engine off but when on, push the clutch in and can't move into any gears.
The guy I bought it from said he was in 3rd then just went into neutral and couldn't get it into a gear.
Talking to the previous owner before him he said the clutch slave cylinder leaked bad.

Is changing the clutch a diy option? Pretty handy on the tools but never touched a clutch before?

There are many ways to change the clutch, my option is to remove the engine and the box........that way you won't stuff the front and rear engine mount trying to just remove the box.

No need to remove engine to replace clutch.

That's why I said "my option".

I just changed my clutch. Just removing the gearbox is miles easier if you have access to a hoist.

I got an exedy heavy duty for around $280. Part number is MBK6276HD. I have the VR4 in my beast too.

Hi

Thanks or the info and link :)
I guess to do at home it is the clearance to drop the gearbox.
And go for the exedy heavy duty, nice to drive in traffic?

Might ring around a few workshops on Monday and get some quotes. How many hours should I look at for a
mechanic to do the clutch? Even the tow truck guy was like I haven't seen one of these in a long time.

Not sure of any workshops down north to do this as the last I used was Morpowa back in the day but I assume any good mechanic
should be able to do a fwd clutch change?

Thanks Mick

Personally the exedy HD is a great clutch, no dramas in traffic, it's a fairly forgiving clutch. Took me two hours to get the box out and about an hour to get it in, plus all the fiddlefarting around that has to be done like cleaning, or in my case rubbing the flywheel back a bit with some wet and dry. Will obviously take longer if your replacing/machining the flywheel but i reckon a good mechanic could get the job done in 2-3 hours.

So got some quotes today ranging from $595 to $1095!
Looking at least $400 in labour.
Still waiting on a few more quotes as they have to price parts.

Hey mate. I will do it for $150 plus the price of the clutch, flywheel machining (if necessary) and any other parts. I am a qualified mechanic in the Elizabeth area.
