got a chance to get my hands on a 3 inch dump for 75. Is it worth it? Or can i get a new one made up for that price? Is there a performance gain also? Cheers

any thing that will help get the gasses out of your turbo quicker is a huge win. so yes it is worth it. and to have a good one made will cost you a bit

That 3 inch will make a massive difference in power over stock. Lag will also be reduced.

will it make the turbo pick up quicker and if so what rpm should the turbo start to boost

Yes it will (In theory) as pressure is indirectly proportional to flow. As a result, greater pressure difference will result in faster flow equaling in less lag of your turbocharger.

How much less lag there will be is dependent on many things, MAINLY DISPLACEMENT however there are several little tricks which can be performed to reduce it and this is one of them as the principal due to fluid mechanics stands.

Well we all need to keep in mind that the Tc series turbochargers are very outdated. They can hardly be compared to the far more efficient turbo's on the market today. So without going into all of this the lag of the tc series turbo's can be reduced by:

- Increasing displacement (Most effective, by faaar)
- Fitting free flowing larger diameter exhaust
- Smaller more efficient intercooler with shorter piping (less volume but enough to suit your application) and as little bends as possible. (An efficient system is desired over a large and poorly designed ebay cooler with backyard piping) check out Bitza! it runs less than half a meter of piping but I would bet money is works better than my HKS front mount (which is really good)
- Uncracked rear turbine housing helps (around waste gate)
- Proper tension on the flap covering the wastegate.

If the lag bothers you heaps the best fix by far would be to change it for newer technology. These days there are much smaller turbo's with lighter more efficient wheels which can make more power. They also last heaps longer due to bearing design.

wait... less lag from a smaller dump pipe? A restrictive exhaust provides good bottom end, crap top end. Let's not mix this up. ;) It'll hit full boost faster if that's what's being suggested...

dont forget the tc series turbos are getting up to 25 years old now... i bet they havnt all been rebuilt so i reckon that the old stuff isnt so bad for reliability if you keep em at the boost levels they were designed for... the more modern stuff can hold way more boost, this is true, but at 12 or so psi a tc-06 is gonna stay happy for a long time

Wrong! the greater the pressure difference before and after the turbine wheel the greater the velocity of flow, resulting in less lag. Therefore freeing up exhaust pressure (what this dump pipe will do) reduces lag! In the same way that higher comp pistons and more cylinders helps in reducing lag, flow is increased!

Now, a smaller diameter manifold is a different story. I wont get into this.

Is this not less lag? It will hit full boost faster therefore less lag.

Yea I haven't forgotten this and most have lasted quite well for what they are. but, it still dosn't change the fact that they are old technology.
Even when they run low boost (as 15 - 17psi is considered to be) they do not last that long. This could be primarily due to the bearing design.
