I found this picture on the net. You young guys would not remember this but when I was your age these were used by the coppers.

There's a few more Cordia police car pictures lurking around, got some on my old HDD.

Apparently they stopped using them because they couldn't just turn them off when they pulled someone up, so they made the switch to non-turbo cars. That's what I heard anyway.

Thats an interesting point, makes sense I suppose. After a pursuit and your little turbo spinning at 250,000 rpm you may want to give that sucker some lube.

Not all of us are 16...some of us (although few and far between) were actually around when the Cordia hit Australian shores back in the early to mid eighties. I am filled with delight to know that the car I drive was once used as highway patrol vehicles to persue speeding motorists. However, this is an image that has been circulated, re-circulated and re-posted on this forum on an annual basis by new members. Nothing against you but this news is so old, it's an antique :)

Nice picture from the 80's! Apparently they stopped using cordias because the 2 door layout was difficult for putting people (criminals) in the back.
Cops used turbo VL commodores as pursuit cars too so turbo failures probably wouldn't be a major reason for ditching the cordias.

No but it would be pretty close to the top. I was speaking to an old cop recently filling up his XR6 turbo at the petty station and he started reminiscing about the days when cops used cordias. They either blew em all up or crashed them and he didn't have too many nice things to say about the brakes. But he also said that, reliability wise, the fords aren't that much better. I mean most cops are not the sharpest tools in the shed and to give them turbo vehicles seems a little beaurocratically irresponsible. But then again Iemma just bailed along with all the other failures so it's not like it exists anyway.

The WA lads used 3 ABs and a couple of Ford Telstar TX5 turbos, all completely unmarked. The blue light would go out the window and be stuck on the roof by a magnetic base. The only way to tell the Cordias were a pursuit vehicle was by the large whip antenna mounted on the rear corner next to the hatch lid. It was about the size of the then popular 27 mHz CB radio antennas of which I had one in mine and happened to have the mount on the rear bumper which made it look very similar. I did get quite a few sideways glances from time to time.
