VICROADS computer problems have knocked out 30 sets of traffic lights at the northern end of the Melbourne CBD, causing chaos for motorists.

The problem could be fixed in an hour or could continue for up to two days, a police spokeswoman said.
She said key intersections were affected across inner-northern suburbs including Collingwood, Fitzroy, Carlton and North Melbourne.

"We're advising people to take extreme care if they're driving in the top-end of the city," she said.

"Due to a computer glitch at VicRoads there are 30 intersections in Carlton and North Melbourne and right across that section of the city that are affected."

Police are on point duty at five of the intersections affected, but motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Comment was being sought from VicRoads.
