Found this link on MCCR, suposidly calculates power to weight and tells you if its legal or not for P platers to drive. (This is based on Victorian legislation, I'm not sure what regulations there are in other states).

Hey,

You can have 125 kW per tonne, which equals 8 kg per kW. You must also have less than 3 litres per tonne.

A standard AB Cordia with a TC06 has a 9.33:1 ratio.

Interestingly, the only reason a P plater can't drive an older manual WRX (not the newer ugly ones) is because it's power to weight is something like 7.98:1 whereas the auto is 8.05:1. Arguably the auto would be less safe! Less driver attention.
