The spammer/bot situations a bit out of control. Perhaps time to update the registration form.
Have a look at the members list and sort by joined date and you get:

I have now deleted those users and have also updated the forum software from 3.0.10 to 3.0.11. Hopefully this closes up some security holes.

Looks like they're bypassing the anti-spam measures and the email activation as well.

I'll look into other options.

A new version of advanced block mod is going through mod validation at the moment (ip and email check to spam db's on signup) There is also a double activation mod from the same dev, but that requires both the admin and user to activate a new account.

I've stopped using Captcha and switched to the built-in Q&A function which seems to be working. Fingers crossed it stays that way. I want to avoid installing a custom mods if possible.

Thats fair enough, the Q & A function stops most anyways. All Captch'a that come with PHPBB have been well and truly cracked unfortunately.
