I decided it was time for a new toy and after owning Cordias for three years it's finally time for something different. I accidentally stumbled upon this on trademe and it was too good a deal to pass by.

The details:
1988 Mitsubishi Eterna ZR4 (basically a 5 door Galant VR4)
160,000 km on the clock with one NZ owner who has owned it for the last 9 years and 95,000km.
Completely unmolested engine, interior and exterior except for roof racks and some ancient ralliart stickers that were probably put on in Japan.

The pictures:

The price:
$3300!? Unbelieveably cheap. The only problem is I had to drive 4 and a half hours each way to get there and I could only give the guy a deposit, so I'll be doing the trip again next week to pick it up. :?

Yup I've got a few plans for it already, 2.5" exhaust with 3" dump pipe, 16" wheels with good tyres, change the timing belt, hard intercooler pipes, K&N pod filter in the place of the battery, hard intake pipes, water injection and some suspension mods (not sure what). Pretty much everything that I had planned to do with the Cordia but never did.

It'll make a great daily driver, once the stickers on the doors and ZR4 badge are removed it'll look just like a normal Eterna.

And before anyone gets too worried, yes the Cordia is faster! The eterna weighs about 50% more... but then it has AWD and a VR4 engine to make up for it.

It should do you well...Sounds like a great deal for the money and looks like It has Heaps and Heaps of potential.

I saw that ZR4 on TM, wandered who was gona buy it? Unmolestered ones are hard to get now
I recently got rid of the sigma gsr and went to a ZR4 too. Already had to spend a shiteload on mine. A bigger money pit than the sigma

I had one as a first car when I was 16, love them
It equals less sifting around on this forum and more on NZMMC

Thanks for all the comments.

I picked the car up yesterday morning and drove it back to Wellington. I'm really impressed with it, it handles really well on the highway and has enough power to overtake from 100 in 5th. The 4ws is interesting, noticeable but hard to describe, I like it though. The biggest difference between it and the Cordia is the ability to put power down through corners, especially going around tight up hill corners where the Cordia would just spin the inside wheel, now I can get all the power to the ground.

Then there's the interior, it has a more modern look to it, massive amounts of leg room in the front and back, no annoying squeeking panels and then all the fancy modern things my Cordia never had like A/C and electric windows.

I'll get some nice high quality pictures of it once I've given it a good wash.

acapella187, what problems have you had with yours?

I brought it as a repossesed car so I dont have any of its history which is annoying
the previous owner has done some fudged up things to the engine:
It had evo injectors - so was overfuelling bad
0xygen sensor was disconnected completely
water lines to turbo removed- whats the point?
has a dual board computer instead of the better factory single board

done plugs, leads, oil, filter, fuel filter, injector cleaner
still doesnt run as well as it should so its going in to get tuned properly. Timing sounds like its over advanced real bad

It sounds like yours was owned by the typical boy racer type who like to butcher cars. Hopefully they at least knew about changing the oil.

I've already had my first problem, the little screw lock thing that holds the wastegate actuator arm on to the wastegate flapper snapped off the second I touched it with a screw driver, so now I have no boost until I can rig something else up to hold it on. Why couldn't they just use a simple lock wire like the Cordia... ?

Definitely owned by your average young boy racer type douche before me. I would be stoked if I could bring it back to factory condition but i just dont know how many things have been dicked with by some idiot

Another annoying thing I have found with the zr4 is its impossible to do even a simple job on it. Everything in the engine bay is almost unaccesable. Too many vacuum hoses and sensors everywhere

I have lost a few bolts and stuff down under the inlet manifold and without a magnetic grabber or a car lift its impossible to get them out.

You think an E39A engine bay is bad? My V6 Galant is horrible. It took two of us over an hour to replace the alternator belt - so much has to be undone in order to get to it!

It also took an hour to replace the rear spark plugs - the whole intake manifold had to come off!
